Everything You Should Know About What's Behind Chatbots
AI Generated

Ever since OpenAI’s debut of ChatGPT on the internet, search queries have come pouring in by hundreds, if not millions, to test, use, and benefit from the chatbot. Whether you need your emails spruced up, a daily schedule on the go, or a quick answer to a burning question, ChatGPT does it all. But how did this technology come to be?

Tracing the origins of ChatGPT back to OpenAI

OpenAI was created in 2015 by a team of founders who had diverse backgrounds in software engineering, computer science, financial technology, and automobiles. The initial lineup of leadership that would contribute extensively to the development of OpenAI comprised of big names in technology and business, such as Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman.

ChatGPT went through multiple iterations before it became the chatbot we all use today. The first version—GPT-1—was introduced in 2018, after which GPT-2, GPT-3, and GPT-4 were released in 2019, 2020, and 2023 respectively.

First, what is ChatGPT?

Simply put, ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that is based on the foundation of LLM or large language models. LLM is a simulation learning model that uses neural networks to predict words, sentences, and accurate answers to questions a human would ask. The model does this by running large amounts of text from common information sources through its system. This gives it an artificial intelligence to decipher the meaning of words and, accordingly, form natural-sounding language.

What can ChatGPT do?

Think of ChatGPT as a super-flexible assistant, but it’s virtual. It can bring you information on anything you want as long as it’s publicly available. It can provide you with insights for a creative project you’re interested in, or just behave almost like a human would, and be a companion you can converse with.

Today’s version of ChatGPT can search the internet if connected and bring current information to you in a simple message, based on your question. It can also do cool stuff like tell you what Disney character you’re closest to in personality based on your prompt history.

Coinheadlines asked ChatGPT what it can and can’t do. Here was the answer we got:

What are the limitations of ChatGPT?

ChatGPT can’t provide expert advice like a qualified professional. It also can’t take real-time information if it is not connected to the internet or access any privately held information. In that sense, it is quite similar to Google as it has the functionality of a search query tool. Given the nature of the technology, its utility is quite malleable based on what the person wants from it.

ChatGPT can also give wrong information due to drawing from incorrect sources or hallucinations, something the chatbot will readily agree to.

Additional features: Sora, GPTs, and ChatGPT Pro

For AI enthusiasts looking to explore further, ChatGPT has multiple other features that people can use.

GPTs offer a suite of AI-enabled custom versions of ChatGPT from which people can choose based on their needs. For topics such as writing, productivity, research & analysis, education, lifestyle, and more, there is a curated GPT that can help with routine tasks associated with that relevant field.

Sora is an AI image creator that can generate a picture based on a message sent with the person’s requirements.

Finally, there’s the premium version of ChatGPT called ChatGPT Pro, an upgraded version that can be used by professionals in any field looking to optimize their routine tasks in their workplace. For example, programmers can use ChatGPT to read their code and suggest fixes.

As ChatGPT continues to develop, we could be able to automate more tasks in our daily routine, making the possibilities endless.
