Linea offers free Layer-2 bridging from Ethereum, albeit limits

Linea, a blockchain network built on Ethereum, announced that it is covering layer-2 gas fees for users bridging assets from Ethereum. However, the offer excludes USDC transfers via Circle’s CCTP, high-gas transactions, and doesn’t cover Ethereum layer-1 fees.

In a remarkable step, the network is now paying gas fees for users who move their assets from Ethereum to Linea using its native bridge.

In a post on X on May 7, Linea said the initiative is designed to make onboarding easier for new users, but it stressed that the promotion applies only to transfers made through Linea’s official bridge and comes with a few conditions.

How to Qualify for Gas-Free Transfers?

The main target for Linea was to lure users to use bridging, framing that promotion applies only to Ethereum-to-Linea transfers using Linea’s native bridge and outlined the following conditions:

  • The promotion only covers layer-1 to layer-2 transactions.
It doesn’t apply to transactions that consume more than 250,000 gas.
  • It excludes USDC transfers made through Circle’s CCTP.
  • Users will still need to cover mainnet gas fees themselves.

Last month, Linea’s head of product stated that the team has decided to delay the launch of its native token until market conditions improve and become more bullish.
