Spain’s Hesperides University announced the launch of its Master in Bitcoin program, marking a milestone in formal academic recognition of Bitcoin. The program will act as a standalone field making the cryptocurrency worthy of rigorous inquiry. While many institutions continue to teach Bitcoin under broader ‘crypto’ or ‘blockchain’ umbrellas, this degree is built solely around Bitcoin, its protocol, economics, cultural and societal implications.
What the course covers?
Designed for working professionals, entrepreneurs and researchers, the Master in Bitcoin provides a deep dive into Bitcoin’s architecture, economic logic and role in society. The program combines academic rigor with practical experience, covering disciplines ranging from monetary theory and philosophy to energy use (mining), cryptography, journalism and economics. Instruction is delivered by a global faculty of educators and practitioners active in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
“This program stands apart, it’s a declaration that Bitcoin deserves serious academic attention, as both a revolutionary technology and a tool for human freedom,” said Kristýna Mazánková, Director of the Master in Bitcoin. Hesperides’ Rector, Gabriel Calzada Álvarez, emphasizes the institution’s goal to “create a space where open minds can question, research and collaborate on Bitcoin without ideological bias.”
Online course tapping students globally
The Master in Bitcoin will be delivered fully online, open to students worldwide, and structured to accommodate professionals with ongoing responsibilities. Enrollment opens in January 2026, and interested candidates can join the waiting list via the university website. In addition to student admissions, Hesperides is calling on educators and Bitcoin professionals, from fields including economics, finance, journalism, activism, mining, security and cryptography, to apply as faculty, mentors or guest lecturers.
By establishing a formal academic framework around Bitcoin, Hesperides aims to bridge the gap between professional practice and scholarly understanding. The Master in Bitcoin program aims to be lay the a foundation for the next generation of Bitcoin educators, builders, and thinkers.
