Crypto news and education platform Bitcoin.com, on Wednesday, said that YouTube has deleted its decade-old channel without any warning. The development has sparked major backlash for the Google-owned video giant, especially after Bitcoin.com claimed its content was labeled as “harmful”.
Bitcoin.com posted about the incident on X on Wednesday. It warned that such algorithmic labels could mislead investors into believing that Bitcoin itself is a scam.
“No strikes. No explanation. Just an algorithm that can’t tell a 10-year-old company from an actual scam. @TeamYouTube — can we get a human, or do we need to buy an ad first,” the platform posted, calling for YouTube to reduce its dependency on automation and provide human assistance.
Bitcoin.com is owned and operated by Saint Bitts LLC, a firm closely associated with Roger Ver, a popular industry figure often referred to as “Bitcoin Jesus” in the Web3 community.
Addressing its situation with YouTube, Bitcoin.com called out YouTube’s inadequacy on moderating scam ads that have repeatedly surfaced on the platform.
It slammed YouTube’s long-complained about moderation failures, pointing out that the video giant repeatedly fails to identify and remove crypto scam ads while red-flagging legitimate creators.
Bitcoin.com has filed an appeal with YouTube seeking explanation and revision of the channel termination. YouTube’s response to the appeal, as per the screenshots, continued to flag the crypto content on the channel as dangerous.
“We reviewed your channel carefully, and have confirmed that it violates our harmful and dangerous policy. We know this is probably disappointing new but it’s our job to make sure that YouTube is a safe place for all. We won’t be putting your channel back up on YouTube,” the video platform said in its response.
Bitcoin.com claimed that its posts strictly included educational crypto-related news and simplified Web3 tutorials. It highlighted that it is viewing YouTube’s account termination action as a “mistaken policy” and not malice.
Following the YouTube channel suspension, the links of its videos that were embedded in the written content published on its webpage.
“The broken embeds on our website and app are leaving millions with the impression Bitcoin itself is a scam,” the platform said, raising concerns.
