AI race: Trump pushes big tech to halt hiring from India, China

No more tech hiring in India, Donald Trump tells Google, Microsoft and others to focus on Americans

US President Donald Trump has asked Big Tech firms like Google, Apple, and Microsoft to stop recruiting tech professionals from outside the U.S. As the race to develop and experiment with Artificial Intelligence (AI) intensifies globally, President Trump said Big Tech firms should restrict onboarding professionals from countries like India and China.

The 47th President of the U.S. was addressing an AI summit in Washington, D.C. when he appealed to the nationalistic spirit of American firms. His instruction comes at a time when 23 percent of the tech force in the U.S. reportedly hails from India and 18 percent from China — highlighting a notable reliance of these companies on foreign talent.

“Winning the AI race will demand a new spirit of patriotism and national loyalty in Silicon Valley and long beyond Silicon Valley,” the 79-year-old said as part of his speech.

He slammed the tech firms for building factories in China, hiring staff from India, and storing profits in Ireland while highlighting that under his presidency, “those days are over”.

“We need US technology companies to be all in for America. We want you to put America first,” the U.S. President added was heard saying.

President Trump is looking to transform the U.S. into the crypto and AI capital of the planet. After signing the stablecoins-focussed GENIUS Act into law last week, he released an AI action plan for the U.S. on July 25.

At a time when Big Tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, Apple, and Google are adding AI-focused goals to their respective roadmaps, the 28-page AI action plan laid out by the White House sets forth clear policy goals for near-term execution by the government. The document highlights that reducing bureaucratic red tape and onerous regulations is crucial at this early stage of the technology’s development.

As per a recent UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report, the international AI market is expected to surge by 25 percent from $189 billion in 2023 to $4.8 trillion by 2033. Data by Statista estimates that in 2025, the U.S. will control the largest AI market share — worth over $73 billion — by the end of 2025.
