Identification AI project World—a Sam Altman-tied crypto project—has gone live in six U.S. cities, according to an announcement made on the 30th of April. The six key innovation hubs included in this launch are Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco.

Formerly known as Worldcoin, the platform leverages AI technology to give American residents the ability to verify their identification anonymously while also providing access to WLD tokens in a secure wallet. Users can also navigate a range of mini-apps centred around education, finance, and social connection on the platform.

World primarily carries out its identification services through a device called the Orb. The Orb is a spherical device that allows a user to identify themselves as human through the World platform. This verification can then be used on other platforms such as Minecraft, Reddit, Telegram, Shopify, and Discord. The device scans a person’s face and eyes to confirm identity, as reported by Cointelegraph.

World has received a lot of scrutiny from regulators and government jurisdictions, mainly centred around privacy issues and data collection methods.

Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI, a position he’s held since 2019. He is considered one of the pioneers in the AI sector with his open-source technology, ChatGPT. Altman co-founded OpenAI with key business figures Peter Thiel, Jessica Livingston, and Elon Musk.
