Coinbase users have filed a class-action lawsuit claiming employees at the Delaware corporation TaskUs have taken bribes of more than half a million dollars, which led to a suspected data breach, as per an official court document.
The filing states that on May 14, 2025, Coinbase said that cyber criminals recruited bad actor support agents in an attempt to orchestrate attacks and attempted to extort the platform for up to $20 million.
The crypto firm said losses were estimated to be anywhere from $180 million to $400 million, also stating that the hack had impacted as many as 97,000 monthly users, 1% of Coinbase’s usual monthly traffic, which is nearly 10 million users.
The support agents were promptly identified as working for TaskUs. While the company said it had reported the crime and was working with law enforcement agencies to resolve the situation, Coinbase is alleging that TaskUs’s involvement in the situation extended to more than just a handful of employees and was part of a structured criminal effort that extended all the way up to management.
The parties representing themselves individually and others affected were Nelson Estrada, Allen Joo, Tiba Parsa, Tim Reynolds, and Craign Burson.
