U.S. President Donald Trump has decided he will not be going the tariff route with NATO allies in the E.U., scrapping his plans to impose tariffs as per a Truth Social post.
“Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region,” the Truth Social post read.

“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.”
Trump first threatened to impose tariffs over the weekend, after representatives from Denmark and Greenland repeatedly emphasized that Greenland is not for sale.
Over the past two weeks, Trump has repeatedly said that Greenmark is a region of strategic importance to the national interests of the U.S., claiming that if the government does not take it over, then either China or Russia will.
Initially framed as a potential acquisition, tensions ratcheted up for the EU when the administration was considering military means as a potential method of taking over Greenland. Now, in a complete U-turn, Trump said in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that using military means will not be necessary.
“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be, frankly, unstoppable. But I won’t do that,” said Trump.
This is not the first time Trump has suggested the purchase of Greenland. During his first term as U.S. president, he made the same statement in 2019, which was also rebuffed by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederikssen who called the idea “absurd”.
