As pure-play AI firms start to target consumer segments served by traditional tech companies, Google is starting to AI-ify as many of its own services as it can, starting with Gmail this year.
As per an official product update on January 8, 2026, Google has rolled out the latest version of Gemini (Gemini 3) for integration into Gmail.
“With email volume at an all-time high, managing your inbox and the flow of information has become as important as the emails themselves. To help, we’re bringing Gmail into the Gemini era and making it your personal, proactive inbox assistant,” read the update.
Created in 2004, Gmail has, for more than 20 years, been considered one of the go-to platforms for emailing and formal communications.
In the update, product VP Blake Barnes introduced the integration, mentioning multiple features that will be included as part of the rollout, mainly
- AI overviews, which will allow users of Gmail to ask questions, similar to Gemini on Google Search
- A “Help Me Write” feature that will compose emails for users in their preferred tone and style of writing. This comes with a suggested reply and proofreading feature also.
- AI inbox, which uses artificial intelligence to prioritize emails, helping to tackle the issue of sifting through too many emails.
The Gemini integration rolls out today, first to users in the U.S., including subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra. Other languages are expected to be introduced after.
