Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the co-founder of cryptocurrency trading platform Binance, has authored his autobiography, titled “Freedom of Money”, releasing the memoir on Tuesday.
The account shares his experiences with the company’s rapid success, intense regulatory scrutiny, and the legal trouble he eventually faced in America’s federal prison as a result.
According to Zhao, who is also popularly referred to as “CZ” in the cryptocurrency industry, his book tells the story of the early stages of Binance, which was initially just a fledgling venture looking to exploit the sudden increase in demand for digital asset trading.
He says that Binance grew at an incredible speed after its launch in 2017 to become the world’s largest crypto exchange by volume, adding that those days were characterized by hectic work and quick decisions as the company struggled to meet growing demand even as the regulatory authorities were working out how to deal with the budding industry.
Interestingly, after the release of Freedom of Money, some readers spotted a phone number mentioned in the book and began sharing it online, raising safety concerns. Responding to the situation, Changpeng Zhao clarified on social media that the number has not been his for many years and cautioned that its current owner could pose security risks, urging people to stay vigilant and avoid contacting it.
Binance drew rising regulatory scrutiny
One key theme in Zhao’s autobiography is the increasing pressure that Binance came under due to its increased influence. Several regulatory bodies in different countries started criticizing Binance for its non-compliance, lack of anti-money laundering protocols, and the dangers that the lack of regulation of the cryptocurrency market presented.
Zhao explains how the company had to face various inquiries and litigations, including ones from departments in America. However, eventually, according to Zhao, the company agreed with the U.S. Department of Justice in 2023, where Binance was fined heavily for billions of dollars.
He also narrates his own experience during the challenging times. He discusses the tough decision of leaving his role as CEO and the uncertain times after, while the legal battles ensued.
CZ reflects on prison lessons in Freedom of Money
In Freedom of Money, Zhao presents his views on acceptance and the repercussions of being held accountable, including his experience with imprisonment, which he sees as a time of self-reflection on leadership, risk-taking, and the duties associated with establishing a firm whose operations are international in scope.
However, Freedom of Money is not a story of failure. In the narrative, Zhao reaffirms his lifelong view of the revolutionary power of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. According to Zhao, digital currencies can render financial systems more inclusive, effective, and borderless, particularly for individuals without regular access to conventional banking services. Zhao does not seem to be optimistic regarding regulation but does acknowledge that the crypto industry is entering its next phase and may require greater regulation in order to move forward.
Zhao’s memoir comes amid the maturation of the crypto industry under stricter regulation.
For everyone in the industry as well as outside commentators, particularly those who cover it like yourself, this book represents an inside look at how one of the most notable figures in the world of cryptocurrency was able to experience the heights of success while also facing the harsh realities of legal responsibility.
