OpenAI has launched the cheapest monthly plan for ChatGPT in India. Called “ChatGPT Go”, the plan priced at Rs. 399 per month, will let Indians access more message limits, more image generation attempts, and more file uploads among other services. With this, Sam Altman’s AI company has joined the list of global corporations like Netflix and Spotify to roll out its cheapest monthly plans to the world’s largest population.

OpenAI has integrated support for UPI payments for this subscription plan given that this online payment technology is widely popular in the country.

Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, confirmed the development on Tuesday, August 19.

“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries,” Turley posted on X.

According to an announcement blog, OpenAI said ChatGPT Go is geo-restricted to India at launch. For now, details on the expansion of this cost-effective service to other regions remains undisclosed.

While the ChatGPT Go plan boils to $4.58 in India, OpenAI’s subscription range for ChatGPT ranges between $20 to $200 in the U.S.

Turley’s announcement of ChatGPT Go garnered mixed reactions on social media. While some Indians argued that OpenAI has just upscaled its free plan in the name of ChatGPT Go, American users of the AI chatbot have complained about the contradictory high prices. Some also claimed that OpenAI is looking to gain the data of Indian users at a large scale for its own benefit.

The other available plans in India include ChatGPT Plus for Rs. 1,999 and ChatGPT Pro for Rs. 19,900 per month respectively.

Earlier this month, OpenAI released GPT-5, calling it the chatbot’s smartest and fastest model as yet.
