AI firm OpenAI is reportedly beginning to test its ads starting from Monday, as per a CNBC report.
The update comes after an announcement made in January, in which OpenAI said that it was considering running an ads feature, in a bid to monetize its platform and allow merchants to market their goods and services on one of the most widely used AI LLMs.
The source is a person familiar with the matter, who remains anonymous but provided details to CNBC.
OpenAI now faces competition from multiple tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, which have stacked LLMs and other viable enterprise technologies on top of their main offerings to keep their products and services competitive.
Alongside main tech, OpenAI also has to deal with pure-play AI companies such as Anthropic, which are gaining ground in the sector quickly due to their focus on developing expertise either in a specific niche or a general broad mix of LLMs and other easy to automate services.
OpenAI is also running a massive burn from expenses and large-scale R&D, with no significant profits. By the end of 2025, the company disclosed an annualized revenue run rate of $20 billion. Reports suggest that operations were also running at a loss by the end of the year, with estimates running from $8 to $9 billion.
