OpenAI is reportedly scouting locations in India to establish a large-scale data center as part of the multi-company “Stargate” AI infra initiative. The move could significantly expand the ChatGPT-maker’s presence in Asia while also elevating the role of Indian minds into the development of advanced AI. The company is also looking to onboard local partners for this ambitious project, Bloomberg reported on Monday, September 1.

OpenAI is set to inaugurate an office in New Delhi this month. Company CEO Sam Altman is reportedly planning to visit Delhi to be part of this office launch. It is likely, that the OpenAI chief meets with potential partners that are being considered to be part of this data center plan.

The facility of at least one-gigabyte in capacity, is expected to be one of the largest AI sites in Asia — with contributors including tech giants like Microsoft and Google.

The Bloomberg report also claimed that the project could fetch participation from “India’s richest man” — without specifying names. At the time of writing, data by Forbes India showed Reliance chief Mukesh Ambani is presently the richest man in India with his net worth exceeding over $101 billion. Gautam Adani, on the other hand, ranks second on the list with net worth over $60 billion as of Monday.

OpenAI announced the Stargate Project in January this year — with the intension of investing $500 billion in developing the infrastructure to support high tech AI capabilities.

The initial equity funders in Stargate include SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. SoftBank and OpenAI. On the other hand, Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI are the key initial technology partners of the Stargate Project.

The AI firm is reportedly exploring to finalize ten partnerships across regions including Norway and Abu Dhabi among others. Under President Donald Trump’s call to the tech giants to prioritize the U.S. and American talent over foreigners — OpenAI recently expanded its US capacity commitment by some 4.5 gigawatts.
