OpenAI launches Stargate Norway

OpenAI successfully rolled out Stargate Norway under its ‘OpenAI for Countries’ program—an initiative that seeks to partner with countries interested in developing their own AI infrastructure, according to an official update by the company on Thursday. Although the Sam Altman-led firm is at the forefront of Stargate, it is being implemented with Oracle and SoftBank as partners. 

Stargate Norway will be its first large-scale infrastructure project in Europe and the company’s second regional Stargate project following Stargate UAE.

“Across the continent, millions of people and businesses use ChatGPT and our API every day. In Norway alone, the number of weekly active ChatGPT users has quadrupled in the past year—most of them under 35—and includes thousands of local developers,” read part of the official statement.

OpenAI’s Stargate Norway will partner with Nscale and Aker

For purposes of developing the project, Stargate Norway will collaborate with Nscale and Aker. The two firms that will own the site as part of a 50-50 joint venture, with design and construction to be done by Nscale. 

Stargate Norway is expected to provide 230 MW of capacity, with future expansion plans projected to add an additional 290 MW. 

For purposes of sustainability, OpenAI’s official statement says the facility will run on renewable energy. Alongside the new site, OpenAI will also be collaborating with the Norwegian government to determine how best to improve AI adoption in the country.
