Sam-Altman’s OpenAI has added one more feature that adds a new layer of functionality for ChatGPT: group chats. As per an official product update on the company’s website, users will now be able to communicate with each other with ChatGPT as an assistant capable of researching and coordinating basic tasks.
The new feature came a day after OpenAI rolled out an upgraded version of its generative AI LLM called GPT-5.1, which is capable of answering simple questions quicker than GPT-5.
For group chats, ChatGPT will also be able to adapt to the context of the conversation in the group and be able to respond or stay silent depending on the topic of discussion.
An addition like this puts OpenAI in competition with social media platforms with enabled group chat features such as Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook.
“Group chats are just the beginning of ChatGPT becoming a shared space to collaborate and interact with others. As ChatGPT becomes an even better partner in group conversations, it will help you spark ideas, make decisions, and express your creativity with the people who matter most in your life,” read the announcement.
“As we pilot this experience, we’ll learn how people use ChatGPT together and will continue refining based on early feedback,”
As 2025 draws to a close, OpenA has continuously been tweaking with ChatGPT, adding multiple new features to it over the year such as Sora 2, study mode, and ChatGPT agent.
