OpenAI shuts down Sora video app, ends $1 billion Disney partnership

Disney Terminates $1 Billion AI Partnership After OpenAI Discontinues Sora

Disney and OpenAI have ended their $1 billion partnership after the AI firm shut down its video-generation platform, Sora.

The news comes just three months after Disney struck a historic deal with Open AI. The three-year deal would have allowed Sora to create videos based on users’ prompts featuring more than 200 masked, animated, or creature-like characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.

Sora and ChatGPT Images would have produced “fan-inspired” videos featuring Disney’s licensed characters in early 2026, with Disney+ adding a curated selection of Sora-created videos.

Disney partnership fallout: what has happened?

The partnership was also viewed as a step towards further integrating artificial intelligence into the entertainment industry. The company was looking for a way to understand how artificial intelligence would be able to help them streamline their production process and improve their visual effects.

Sora, which gained worldwide attention because of its ability to produce realistic videos from simple text prompts, was viewed as a major part of this plan. However, since Sora is no longer available for public use, it appears that there is a weakening of the foundation of this partnership.

As a company like Disney, who may need huge budgets for their productions, reliability is a major factor. A change in a fundamental aspect of their production and uncertainty about it can change the cost-benefit equation. The company is taking a safer route by dissolving this partnership. A spokesperson for The Walt Disney Company said “we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere”

Sora fallout shows more work still needed

The Sora fallout is also reflective of a larger reality within the fast-moving world of AI. Many of these cutting-edge technologies are still in their development stages, and companies are often updating or even pivoting their technologies as new innovations emerge.

Of course, this is all good for innovation, but it can also prove problematic for larger entities who need clear and stable technologies. This is particularly true for industries like film and streaming, in which long-term planning can extend for years. The sudden shift in technology can prove problematic for even the best of laid plans.

Nevertheless, it is also important to note that this is not a sign of either of these companies pulling back from artificial intelligence.

In fact, both companies are pouring significant investment into new technologies, and it is expected that collaboration between tech companies and media companies will be a major trend. It is also a reminder, however, of how partnerships can shift even within new technologies like AI.
