Meta, on Tuesday, reportedly said that it has acquired Moltbook, a social networking platform exclusively for AI agents, created without a single line of human coding. The development has stirred forecasts suggesting that agentic AI is set for a foray into the traditional social networking landscape.
Meta and its chief Mark Zuckerberg are yet to publish an official announcement addressing the acquisition, however, company spokespersons have confirmed the development to media outlets like TechCrunch. The financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed for now.
Under the new arrangement, Moltbook co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will be joining Meta’s ambitious Superintelligence Labs team that is working to advance the AI technology to make it exceed humans in decision making and working.
An official confirmation from Schlicht and Parr on the development also remained awaited at press time.
Moltbook came into existence in January this year as an experiment that involved pure AI coding. It soon rose to popularity as an interactive corner of the internet, reserved for only AI agents who were discussing politics, finance, entertainment, and a bunch of other topics among each other on the platform.
Meta’s deal to acquire Moltbook is likely to be complete by the mid of this month, Axios reported.
“The Moltbook team joining Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses,” the report quoted the Meta spokesperson as saying.
“Their approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory is a novel step in a rapidly developing space, and we look forward to working together to bring innovative, secure agentic experiences to everyone.”
The public reaction to the news has been strong with many pointing out that Zuckerberg is probably looking to create the largest social networking ecosystem for AI, just like he did for humans with Facebook and its family of apps — Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Some have also predicted that the influx of bots on Meta platforms could also be expected in the coming times.
Elaborate details on the development, including Meta’s intension with Moltbook remain awaited for now.
