OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s home in San Francisco-based North Beach residence was attacked by an alleged Molotov Cocktail or a petrol bomb on Friday. The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) posted an announcement on the incident disclosing that the it resulted in a fire to the exterior gate of the attacked property.
The SFPD said “an unknown male subject threw an incendiary destructive device at a home” and later threatened to burn the building down.
A spokesperson from OpenAI has reportedly confirmed the development to CNBC, saying nobody was injured in the incident.
After attacking Altman’s resident, the individual fled on foot and reached OpenAI’s headquarters. He was seen threateaning property damage which was reported to the SFPD.
Officers on patrol identified the attacker and arrested the 20-year-old.
As of now, no charges in the case have been disclosed.
The incident comes at a time when Altman as well as OpenAI have been intensifying their efforts in advancing the AI ecosystem. In the thick of business upgrades, however, controversies have continued to follow Altman has found himself in controveries recently.
Earlier this month, The New Yorker published an investigative report against Altman, claiming he has misrepresented safety risks to the OpenAI board and management. The report featured a 70-page dossier compiled by former OpenAI board members.
OpenAI is working with SFPD in the investigation, elaborate details about which remain undisclosed for now.
Neither Altman nor OpenAI had addressed the situation on public platforms as of press time
