X announces penalty for creators sharing AI-made war videos

X introduces 90-day revenue-sharing ban for undisclosed AI war videos

Social networking giant X is trying to curb the spread of misinformation through its platform as the geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel continue to prevail. Creators identified circulating AI-generated videos related to the war will lose their revenue share from the platform for 90 days.

Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, conveyed details of the decided penalty to its creator community on Tuesday.

“Users who post AI-generated videos of an armed conflict—without adding a disclosure that it was made with AI—will be suspended from Creator Revenue Sharing for 90 days. Subsequent violations will result in a permanent suspension from the program,” Bier noted.

X chief Elon Musk has been integrating capabilities from xAI’s Grok to identify AI-generated content and trace their sources last year.

“During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people. This will be flagged to us by any post with a Community Note or if the content contains meta data (or other signals) from generative AI tools,” Bier noted.

A user commented under Bier’s X post asking what if somebody were to mistakenly share an AI-generated war-related video, then what could be done to avoid the platform’s punishment?

Replying to the query Bier said, “You will need to add the ‘Made with AI’ label by pressing the menu on the post and select Add Content Disclosures.”

This step from X came after many reached out to X asking for verification on footages circulating on the platform featuring strikes, drones, missiles, and destruction. This content often show wrong geo-locations and cite inaccurate information, causing panic among people living in the region.

“Last night, we found a guy in Pakistan that was managing 31 accounts posting AI war videos. All were hacked and the usernames were changed on Feb 27 to ‘Iran War Monitor’ or some derivative. We are getting much faster at detecting this—and also eliminating the incentive to do this,” Bier posted on Wednesday.

Those creating such fake videos, Bier said, are broke people trying to jump on trend and mooch off on X’s revenue share programme.

The minimum payout for content creators on X is $30. Those that have clocked at least five million organic views within the last three months, with over 500 verified followers are eligible for X’s creator revenue share programme.
