Elon Musk’s EV brand Tesla is working to improve certain features of its self driving vehicles. On Wednesday, August 6 Musk shared on X that Tesla has initiated the process of training a new full self driving (FSD) model — that could hit the roads as early as September.

Tesla’s FSD technology is a bunch of advanced driver-assistance features that brings partial automated driving to its EVs. The FSD features on Tesla uses hardware and software systems to bring advanced camera features, autopilot navigation, autosteer, auto lance change, and traffic light sensitivity to the Tesla cars.

Without revealing too many details on the new FSD model, Musk did mention that it will come with big improvement to video compression loss.

Musk’s focus on improving its FSD technology for Tesla cars come at a time when the EV firm is rolling out its fleet of “robotaxis”. On June 22, Tesla’s Robotaxi initiative officially went live in Austin, Texas. Riders of these autonomous cabs are also allowed personalize ride features including seat positioning, climate settings, and music streaming.

While “self driving” has been a backbone for Tesla cars, the course of its finetuning has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride for Musk or the company. As reported by Forbes, hundred of nonfatal incidents and 51 reported fatalties have been documented till October 2024 that involved Tesla’s autopilot feature.

Just last week, Tesla was ordered to pay $329 million to the families two victims, one of whom died and the other suffered head trauma, in a 2019 accident that was caused by a Tesla car.

Musk’s company was dissatisfied with the decision and said it would appeal against the jury decision. Tesla, reacting to the development, also said that its self-driving cars are capable of safely operating fleets of robotaxis as public transport.
