U.S. President Donald Trump said on Truth Social on Monday that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil.

“It was an Honor to speak with Prime Minister Modi, of India, this morning. He is one of my greatest friends and, a Powerful and Respected Leader of his Country. We spoke about many things, including Trade, and ending the War with Russia and Ukraine,” said Trump

“He agreed to stop buying Russian Oil, and to buy much more from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela. This will help END THE WAR in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!”

Alongside the commitment to stop buying Russian oil, Trump has said that the two leaders agreed to a trade deal in which both countries will reduce tariffs on each other. He also said Modi has committed to buying American goods “at a much higher level,”

In August 2025, Trump said that India was indirectly funding Russia’s war in Ukraine by buying the country’s oil, after which the White House increased tariffs to 50%.
