U.S. President Donald Trump stoked geopolitical friction with India via his Truth Social post on Wednesday. Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on Indian imports starting August 1, along with a “penalty” for what he called India’s unfair trade practices and ties with Russia. The statement has raised concerns over U.S.-India trade relations and could complicate bilateral efforts to deepen economic cooperation.

Trump threatens 25% tariff on India, citing trade barriers and Russia ties

In his post, Trump criticized India’s high tariffs, stating that they are among the highest globally, and also pointed fingers at its non-monetary trade barriers, calling them “strenuous and obnoxious.” He also took a potshot at India’s longstanding defense and energy relationships with Russia, saying such ties undermine international efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Implications for trade relations

While India is considered a key U.S. ally in the Indo-Pacific, Trump’s statement threatens to unravel years of careful diplomacy. The move comes just before a self‑imposed reciprocal tariff deadline and amid ongoing U.S.–India trade deal negotiations, which have completed five rounds and are expected to resume mid‑August.

Currently, the U.S. applies a baseline 10% tariff on Indian imports and has proposed an additional 26% country‑specific reciprocal levy, paused pending deal finalization. In 2023, the two countries ended six outstanding trade disagreements and saw two-way trade reach a record $191 billion. The U.S. also removed India from its Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) in 2019, eliminating duty-free access to certain Indian exports.

Trump’s warning to Tim Cook

During a public event in Doha, Trump disclosed he had advised Apple CEO Tim Cook not to manufacture iPhones in India for the U.S. market, despite India’s offer to waive tariffs. Trump claimed he urged Cook to invest in U.S. plants instead, saying “we are not interested in you building in India.”

Meanwhile, India produced $22 billion worth of iPhones over the past year, with partners like Foxconn, Tata and Pegatron, and exports to the U.S. accounted for nearly 97% of Foxconn’s shipments between March–May 2025.

If implemented, Trump’s tariff threats could impact not only tech and defense ties but also broader supply chains and investment flows, potentially forcing U.S. firms to reassess their India strategy.
