Elon Musk-owned AI company xAI is now available for use in Microsoft Co-Pilot Studio, as per an announcement on Thursday. xAI models were added alongside OpenAI and Anthropic models, expanding the feature’s multi-model setup.

The announcement—written by Principal Product Manager Ami Shastri—said U.S.-based developers can now use Grok 4.1.

The update comes alongside another product update by Google for its Gemini Pro model, the Gemini Pro 3, a model capable of stronger logical reasoning.

While the integration is a collaboration between one of Elon Musk’s key business—now absorbed within space firm SpaceX—and a silicon valley tech giant, the partnership comes with a few caveats: one is xAI models will be hosted outside of Microsoft’s managed environments and users who opt to try these models for their personal projects will be doing so under an agreement with xAI, not Microsoft.

“Starting today, Grok 4.1 Fast is available in preview in early access environments, and is off by default. Your organization’s admin must explicitly opt in to use the model before US-based makers can build with it,” read the official update.

“If an admin doesn’t opt in, nothing changes and makers keep their current model options. Existing agents continue running exactly as they do today,”

At the time of writing, Microsoft shares were trading at $397.50. SpaceX is reportedly planning for its IPO to take place in 2026, with its recent acquisition of xAI expected to boost the total value of the new entity before equity is sold to shareholders.

The integration is a sign that tech firms will continue to update their platforms in order to remain competitive, even if it means stacking other tech offerings on top of its own existing technology.
